US Bureau Of Labor Statistics – 2500 Fewer Jobs In The Legal Industry

New lawyers who have just passed the bar exam in the US will have fewer job prospects, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A newly released report for the month of June indicates that the legal industry actually lost more than 2500 job in June. With new graduates competing for the same jobs that seasoned attorneys are going after, it will be more difficult for inexperienced lawyers to find work. Some reports show that sectors such as real estate, probate and corporate law were hit especially hard. Legal experts have an easier time finding work with insurance companies and law firms that specialize in criminal law.

Before the start of the recession, the average law school graduate was capable of earning more than $100 an hour, on average. Now, many new lawyers are accepting paralegal positions and earning around $25 an hour. Because most new hires have over $120,000 in student loan debt, they are not able to work as interns or in jobs outside of their area of focus.

This is the fourth time this year that the legal industry has posted a staggering job loss. Even the few times that the legal industry has seen growth, the number of jobs added only numbered in the hundreds. Law schools are also seeing fewer applicants. Some law students are taking classes part-time so that they are better able to manage their debts. Ultimately, legal careers are still viable, however, graduates have to be more careful about how and where they receive their education.
