US Bureau Of Labor Statistics – 2500 Fewer Jobs In The Legal Industry

New lawyers who have just passed the bar exam in the US will have fewer job prospects, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A newly released report for the month of June indicates that the legal industry actually lost more than 2500 job in June. With new graduates competing for the same jobs that seasoned attorneys are going after, it will be more difficult for inexperienced lawyers to find work. Some reports show that sectors such as real estate, probate and corporate law were hit especially hard. Legal experts have an easier time finding work with insurance companies and law firms that specialize in criminal law.

Before the start of the recession, the average law school graduate was capable of earning more than $100 an hour, on average. Now, many new lawyers are accepting paralegal positions and earning around $25 an hour. Because most new hires have over $120,000 in student loan debt, they are not able to work as interns or in jobs outside of their area of focus.

This is the fourth time this year that the legal industry has posted a staggering job loss. Even the few times that the legal industry has seen growth, the number of jobs added only numbered in the hundreds. Law schools are also seeing fewer applicants. Some law students are taking classes part-time so that they are better able to manage their debts. Ultimately, legal careers are still viable, however, graduates have to be more careful about how and where they receive their education.

Habitual Drunk Driver Receives 15 Year Prison Term

After Judge David R. Cashman learned that defendant Richard Anthony Caporal had been convicted of drunk driving 14 times in the past, he handed down a 15 year prison sentence. Caporal has had a valid drivers license for 34 years, also had his license revoked for 33 years. Carporal's attorney managed to arrange a plea deal with the district attorney, however, Judge Cashman believed that the defendant would not get enough prison time if he approved the deal. Instead of going to prison for two to five years as originally arranged, Caporal will stay in prison until he is over 70 years old.

Caporal's most recent drunk driving conviction came in 2009, when he nearly drove his vehicle into a house. Because of Caporal's habitual status, he could have been sent to prison for life. Instead, Judge Cashman opted to send Caporal to prison for 15 years. It is not clear if Caporal has ever caused any physical injuries, but he has been fined, jailed and had his license revoked on numerous occasions.

Drunk driving is an offense that is punished in varying degrees. Most first time offenders are able to avoid jail time, however, for each subsequent charge they risk losing their licenses for an extended period of time. Judge Cashman believes that Caporal poses a serious risk to other motorists. In order to prevent Caporal from killing or maiming another driver, he has been remanded to the Allegheny County Jail. Caporal will soon be transferred to state prison.
